Single Phase Parallel AC Circuits and Resonance

Ques1: A 20 ohms resistor is connected in parallel with an inductance of 2.387 mH across a 60 V, 1 kHz supply. Calculate (a) the
current in each branch, (b) the supply current, (c) the circuit phase angle, (d) the circuit impedance, and (e) the power consumed. Ques2: A 30 ohm resistor is connected in parallel with a pure inductance of 3 mH across a 110 V, 2 kHz supply. Calculate (a) the current in each branch, (b) the circuit current, (c) the circuit phase angle, (d) the circuit impedance, (e) the power consumed, and (f) the circuit power factor. Ques3: A 1500 nF capacitor is connected in parallel with a 16 ohm resistor across a 10 V, 10 kHz supply. Calculate (a) the current in each branch, (b) the supply current, (c) the circuit phase angle, (d) the circuit impedance, (e) the power consumed, (f) the apparent power, and (g) the circuit power factor. Draw the phasor diagram. Ques4: A capacitor C is connected in parallel with a resistance R across a 60 V, 100 Hz supply. The supply current is 0.6 A at a power factor of 0.8 leading. Calculate the value of R and C. Ques5: An inductance of 80 mH is connected in parallel with a capacitance of 10 microfarad across a 60 V, 100 Hz supply. Determine (a) the branch currents, (b) the supply current, (c) the circuit phase angle, (d) the circuit impedance and (e) the power consumed. Ques6: A coil of resistance 60 ohms and inductance 318.4 mH is connected in parallel with a 15microfarad capacitor across a 200 V, 50 Hz supply. Calculate (a) the current in the coil, (b) the current in the capacitor, (c) the supply current and its phase angle, (d) the circuit impedance, (e) the power consumed, (f) the apparent power and (g) the reactive power. Draw the phasor diagram. Ques7: A coil of inductance 159.2 mH and resistance 40 _ is connected in parallel with a 30 F capacitor across a 240 V, 50 Hz supply. Calculate (a) the current in the coil and its phase angle, (b) the current in the capacitor and its phase angle, (c) the supply current and its phase angle,(d) the circuit impedance, (e) the power consumed, (f) the apparent power, and (g) the reactive power. Draw the phasor diagram. Ques8: Find the resonant frequency of a series a.c. circuit consisting of a coil of resistance 10 ohms and inductance 50 mH and capacitance 0.05 microfarad. Find also the current flowing at resonance if the supply voltage is 100 V. Ques9: A coil of resistance 5 ohms and inductance 120 mH in series with a 100 microfarad capacitor, is connected to a 300 V, 50 Hz supply. Calculate (a) the current flowing, (b) the phase difference between the supply voltage and current, (c) the voltage across the coil and (d) the voltage across the capacitor. Ques10: The current at resonance in a series LCR circuit is 100 microamperes. If the applied voltage is 2 mV at a frequency of 200 kHz, and the circuit inductance is 50 microhenry, find (a) the circuit resistance, and (b) the circuit capacitance. Ques11: A coil of inductance 80 mH and negligible resistance is connected in series with a capacitance of 0.25 F and a resistor of resistance 12.5 ohms across a 100 V, variable frequency supply. Determine (a) the resonant frequency, and (b) the current at resonance. How many times greater than the supply voltage is the voltage across the reactances at resonance? Ques12: A coil of negligible resistance and inductance100 mH is connected in series with a capacitance of 2 F and a resistance of 10 ohms across a 50 V, variable frequency supply. Determine (a) the resonant frequency, (b) the current at resonance, (c) the voltages across the coil and the capacitor at resonance, and (d) the Q-factor of the circuit. Ques13: A filter in the form of a series LRC circuit is designed to operate at a resonant frequency of 5 kHz. Included within the filter is a 20 mH inductance and 10 ohms resistance. Determine the bandwidth of the filter. Ques14: A 0.15microfarad capacitor and a pure inductance of 0.01 H are connected in parallel across a 10 V, variable frequency supply. Determine (a) the resonant frequency of the circuit, and (b) the current circulating in the capacitor and inductance. Ques15: A coil of resistance 25ohm and inductance 150 mH is connected in parallel with a 10microfarad capacitor across a 60 V, variable frequency supply. Calculate (a) the resonant frequency, (b) the dynamic resistance, (c) the current at resonance and (d) the Qfactor at resonance. Ques16: A coil of resistance 1.5 kiloohms and 0.25 H inductance is connected in parallel with a variable capacitance across a 10 V, 8 kHz supply. Calculate (a) the capacitance of the capacitor when the supply current is a minimum, (b) the dynamic resistance, and (c) the supply current.

Ques17: A motor has an output of 6 kW, an efficiency of 75% and a powerfactor of 0.64 lagging when operated from a 250 V, 60 Hz
supply. It is required to raise the power factor to 0.925 lagging by connecting a capacitor in parallel with the motor. Determine (a) the current taken by the motor, (b) the supply current after power factor correction, (c) the current taken by the capacitor, (d) the capacitance of the capacitor and (e) the kvar rating of the capacitor.
