Chemistry Lab Report: Lab O5

Nickel (II) chloride hexahydrate was dissolved in ethanol and reacted with 1,2-diaminoethane, forming a precipitate that was filtered and recrystallized. An electronic spectrum was recorded of the product dissolved in an aqueous solution of 1,2-diaminoethane. Crystals of the product were tested for solubility and reactivity when placed in various solvents, with some being heated to observe changes.

Chemistry Lab Report: Lab O5

Nickel (II) chloride hexahydrate (4 grams) was dissolved in ethanol (35 mL) on a steam bath. Once cooled, 1,2-diaminoethane (4.0 mL) was added drop-wise with stirring. The resulting precipitate was filtered off and washed with ethanol (10 mL). The product was recrystallised from a hot ethanol:water mixture (4:1 v/v, approx. 40 mL). A 0.1 mol/L solution of the product was made using an aqueous solution of 1,2-diaminoethane (20% v/v). An electronic spectrum (300-600 nm) was then recorded. A few crystals were then placed in 8 separate micro test tubes. The solubility/reactivity of the crystals was then tested with a variety of solvents (water, methanol, hexane, acetone, 3M HCl, 0.1M HCl, 1M acetic acid, 3M aqueous ammonia). Samples that did not dissolve or react were heated on a steam bath for 1 minute.b
