Sess Test-1

The document contains 5 questions from an advanced statistics test. Question 1 asks students to estimate a linear regression line from sample data and predict a grade. Question 2 asks students to test if cotton fiber has a significantly higher absorbency than acetate fiber using sample data and assumptions. Question 3 asks students to determine if a soft drink machine is out of control using a sample variance and significance level. Question 4 asks students to test hypotheses about the variances of times for men and women to assemble a product using sample data. Question 5 asks for the probability of no log-ons in a 6 minute interval, given a Poisson process model for log-ons.

Sessional Assessment Test

Advanced Statistics Q1. The grades of a class of 9 students on a midterm report (x) and on the final examination (y) are as follows:

(a) Estimate the linear regression line. (b) Estimate the final examination grade of a student who received a grade of 85 on the midterm report. Q2. According to Chemical Engineering, an important property of fiber is its water absorbency. The average percent absorbency of 25 randomly selected pieces of cotton fiber was found to be 20 with a standard deviation of 1.5. A random sample of 25 pieces of acetate yielded an average percent of 12 with a standard deviation of 1.25. Is there strong evidence that the population mean percent absorbency is significantly higher for cotton fiber than for acetate? Assume that the percent absorbency is approximately normally distributed and that the population variances in percent absorbency for the two fibers are the same. Use a significance level of 0.05. Q3. A soft-drink dispensing machine is said to be out of control if the variance of the contents exceeds 1.15 deciliters. If a random sample of 25 drinks from this machine has a variance of 2.03 deciliters, does this indicate at the 0.05 level of significance that the machine is out of control? Assume that the contents are approximately normally distributed. Q4 A study is conducted to compare the lengths of time required by men and women to assemble a certain product. Past experience indicates that the distribution of times for both men and women is approximately normal but the variance of the times for women is less than that for men. A random sample of times for 11 men and 14 women produced the following data:

Test the hypothesis that 12 = 22 against the alternative that 12 > 22. Q5 In a large corporate computer network, user log-ons to the system can be modeled as a Poisson process with a mean of 25 log-ons per hour. What is the probability that there are no log-ons in an interval of 6 minutes? xxxxxxxxxxxx
