NEW Graduation Requirements for the Ninth Grade Class of 2013-14 The recent passing of Senate Bill 1076

has made changes to Graduation Requirements for students entering high school for the first time in 2013-14. There have been revisions to both the 24 Credit Standard Diploma option and the 18 Credit Standard Diploma option, as well as the addition of two new Diploma Designations that students can work towards. Students entering ninth grade this year pursuing a standard diploma can choose either of the two diploma options and may also choose to work towards one of the two new Diploma Designations. If no diploma option is chosen, students will be assigned to the 24 credit diploma option. Students can change their diploma option at any time. Students choosing the 24 Credit Standard Diploma option will need to pass the designated 24 credits, maintain a Grade Point Average of at least a 2.0, and earn passing scores on the FCAT 2.0 Reading and Algebra 1 End of Course exams. 2 credits of world languages will not be a required to graduate, but any student seeking admissions to a state university or a Bright Futures scholarship will need to take these classes as part of their elective choices. Students choosing the 18 Credit Standard Diploma option will need to pass the designated 18 credits, maintain a Grade Point Average of at least a 2.0, and earn passing scores on the FCAT 2.0 Reading and Algebra 1 End of Course exams. This option may limit a students postsecondary options as well as Bright Futures scholarship eligibility. Students choosing to work towards a Merit Designation on their diploma will need to earn 1 or more industry certifications. These certifications can lead to high wage, high skill careers, as well as postsecondary credit. Students choosing to work towards a Scholar Designation on their diploma will need to earn 2 credits in the same world language earn credit in at least 1 accelerated class: Advanced Placement (AP), Dual Enrollment, International Baccalaureate (IB), or Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE), and earn passing scores on the state End of Course Exams in Biology, US History, and Algebra 2, when it becomes available. Students planning to attend college after high school are strongly encouraged to work towards the Scholar Designation. Students with disabilities will still have the option of choosing one of several Special Diploma options to meet their educational needs.
