Recitation 2

The document summarizes problems from a materials science and general chemistry recitation covering topics like: 1) Whether an applied stress will cause yield in a metal single crystal given the critical resolved shear stress and angles between the tensile axis and slip plane/direction. 2) Calculating the maximum yield strength for a BCC metal single crystal given the critical resolved shear stress. 3) Determining if fracture will occur at a given stress level and crack length for an aluminum alloy. 4) Computing the minimum diameter of a steel bar subjected to cyclic stresses to prevent fatigue failure. 5) Listing measures to increase fatigue resistance in a metal alloy.

-RECITATION 21) Consider a metal single crystal oriented such that the normal to the slip plane and the slip direction are at angles of 60o and 35o, respectively, with the tensile axis. If the critical resolved shear stress is 20.7 MPa, will an applied stress of 45 MPa cause single crystal to yield? If not, what stress will be necessary? 2) The critical resolved shear stress for a BCC metal is 0.65 MPa. Determine the max. yield strength for a single crystal of this metal pulled in tension. 3) Some aircraft component is fabricated from an aluminum alloy that has a plane strain fracture toughness of 40 MPa m. It has been determined that fracture results at a stress of 300 MPa when the maximum internal crack length is 4.0 mm. For the same component and alloy, will fracture occur at a stress level of 260 MPa when the maximum internal crack length is 6.0 mm? Why or why not? 4) A cylindrical 1045 steel bar is subjected to repeated compression-tension stress cycling along its axis. If the load amplitude is 66700 N, compute the minimum allowable bar diameter to ensure that fatigue failure will not occur.

5) List four measures that may be taken to increase the resistance to fatigue of a metal alloy
