Paracetamol is a non-opioid analgesic that works by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis in the central nervous system and blocking pain impulses peripherally. It acts on the hypothalamic heat-regulating center to produce vasodilation and reduce fever. Common indications include fever relief and mild to moderate pain from conditions like headaches, muscle aches, and pain from colds or vaccinations. It should not be used with alcohol or by those with hypersensitivity. Potential adverse effects include gastrointestinal issues, sweating, and weakness. Nurses monitor patients for therapeutic effects and side effects when administering paracetamol orally.
