1 Advantages and Disadvantages of Mechatronics

The document outlines advantages and disadvantages of mechatronics. Key advantages include high integration levels, increased functionality through less mechanical parts and more electronics/software, and improved reliability, safety, and productivity. Disadvantages are the initially high costs, complex design/systems, difficult maintenance and replacement, increased power needs, and the multidisciplinary knowledge required of technicians and engineers.

1 ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF MECHATRONICS Advantage: 1. High level of integration 2. Increased functionality and design 3.

More use of electronics and software instead of mechanical functions 4. Assume responsibility for process and operations with little interference of operators 5. Use artificial intelligence and intelligent process control 6. Multisensory and programs environment 7. High reliability and safety 8. Improved and less expensive controls 9. Provides increased productivity on the shop floor 10. Results in automation in production, assembly and quality control 11. Production of parts and products of international standards gives better reputation and return

Disadvantage: 1. The initial cost is very high 2. Complicated design and system 3. The repair and maintenance is complex 4. Its replacement is difficult, i.e. it is difficult to change old system to new system 5. Increased power requirements 6. Real time calculations/ mathematical models 7. The concurrent integration of mechatronic design requires multidisciplinary knowledge 8. Calls for training and re-orientation of the workforce, in design, and in manufacturing 9. Technicians and engineers have to be given basic knowledge of two domain disciplines, i.e. precision mechanics and electronics
