CHEMISTRY SYLLABUS 2013-2014 SCHOOL YEAR

Instructor: Ms. Maya Bhagat Location: Room 224, Chemistry Lab Office Hours: 7.30am 3.00pm After School, by appointment Email: [email protected] Website: [email protected]

I. Course Essential Questions How do we recognize and evaluate the pervasiveness of chemistry daily? What are the conceptual commonalities in art and science? How do atomic particles of matter manifest as a collective whole? What are the values and shortcomings that exist in experimental design? How can we observe and predict patterns to better serve humanity? How do we quantify qualitative factors? How can we negotiate matter and materials to provide sustainable solutions to address local and global concerns?

II. Course Description This course is designed to enable students to think critically, in relation to real world applications. It is a study of science in the microscopic world and how it contributes functionally and aesthetically to our visibly observable macroscopic world. Classical and contemporary scientific concepts will be explored through, and not limited to Socratic inquiry, current news and research, laboratory discovery and experimentation, student collaborations, multidisciplinary projects, industry and science academic engagement. Supportive reading and web based direct instructional materials will be made available to include access for all students. III. Course Outline Attached on final page before, the receipt signature confirmation page. IV. Code of Conduct Students shall abide by the Student Code of Conduct outlined by the School District of Philadelphia (see student handbook). Students shall abide by the Common Expectations for Rush Arts Students: BE Punctual, Respectful, Prepared, Responsible, Your Best! Ms. Bhagats Classroom and Lab Expectations: Plan ahead and be prepared Listen to - and follow instructions Try! Think! Take safety seriously Seek solutions - not excuses

VI. Grading Policy Every assignment has a point value associated with it. These will factor into your grade as follows:

Type of Assignment
Class work Homework Tests and Quizzes Participation Projects

Weighted Percentage

20 20 25 10 15 TOTAL 100 Initiative and Contribution + Extra Credit Points Rush Arts Grading Policy: A: 90 -100 %. B: 80 - 89 %. C: 70 - 79 % D: 65 - 69 % F: 50 - 64 %

Rush Arts Late Assignment Policy: There is a school-wide policy in effect for students who return assignments after the designated due date. Assignments turned in one day past the due date will receive up to 75% credit; assignments turned in two days past the due date will receive up to 50% credit; assignments turned in three days past the due date will receive up to 25% credit; no credit will be given to assignments turned in four or more days beyond the due date. Students who have an unexcused absence on the due date of an assignment will be expected to turn in assignments on the day they return to school. Students who have an excused absence must present a note to the teacher in order for the work to be accepted and not penalized. Students who are absent due to field trips or extra curricular programming on the due date of an assignment are still held responsible for meeting deadlines. Please note that teachers will take exceptions, into consideration. This course is designed to develop and integrate life skills and students are rewarded by stepping-up and showing up. Fifty percent of all assignment points will be earned for setting up the page with necessary details as instructed during the first two weeks of school, and turning in assignments on time and by due date. The remaining 50% will be earned through careful, conscious completion of the assignment. Students should plan ahead when participating in any events in or outside school. Exceptions are due to life and health emergencies. It is the students responsibility to make up the work, and collaborate with reliable class colleagues to complete any class work or assignments that have been missed. You can make arrangements to meet with Ms. Bhagat, before during or after school when you are anticipating an absence. VII. Academic Integrity: Cheating and Plagiarism Policy Cheating and academic misconduct will be treated as serious offences in this course. I consider academic misconduct to be any act that can give unfair advantage to a students grades or records. Incidents of cheating will result in a zero on the assignment with notification sent to parents or guardians. VIII. Laboratory Safety We will be conducting many experiments this year. It is imperative that you read and sign the laboratory safety contract, so we can have some safe fun in the lab!

Thank you!
