Homework Problems: Week 3: Due Friday 28 September

This document provides 9 homework problems involving analyzing structures and systems using methods of joints, sections, centroids, and other mechanics principles. The problems involve determining member forces in trusses, relationships between applied forces and distances, stiffness of a spring, and reactions of a beam under a sinusoidal load. Sketches of the structures are provided along with key information like member lengths, applied loads, and other dimensions.

HOMEWORK PROBLEMS

Week 3: Due Friday 28 September

1. A 4000 lb block of concrete is attached by light inextensible cables to the truss in Figure 1. Use the method of joints to determine the force in each member. State whether each member is in tension or compression.

6. Figure 6 shows a weighing machine. The object to be weighed W is placed on the horizontal platform and the small counter weight w is moved along the horizontal bar until the system is in equilibrium with the bar between the two stops. Find the relationship between W , w and the equilibrium position of the counterweight dened by the distance a. Also, explain why the position of W , dened by the distance b, has no effect on the result, so that it is not necessary to place W at the middle of the platform.
