Steps To Design A Culvert

This document provides a design example for a box culvert with inside dimensions of 3.5m x 3.5m. It is subjected to a dead load of 20,000 N/m^2 from the top and a live load of 45,000 N/m^2. The soil has a unit weight of 18,000 N/m^3 and angle of repose of 30 degrees. M20 concrete and Fe 415 steel will be used. The box culvert will be designed for a 1 meter length considering live load, dead load, earth pressure without internal water pressure.

11.4.

DESIGN OF BOX CULVERT

DesignExample 11.2. Design a box culvert having inside dimen sions 3.5 m x 3.5 m. The box culvert is subjected to a superimposed dead load of J2(}()() Nlm2 and a live load of 45()()() Nlm' from the top. Assume unit weight of soil as J8(}()() Nlm 3 and angle of repose of JQ. Use M 20 concrete and Fe 415 steeL

Solution
1. General

For the purpose of design, one metre length of the box is considered. The analysis is done for the following cases : (1) Live load, dead load and earth pressure acting, with no water pressure from inside.
