5.4 Equation of Straight Line

This document discusses the equation of a straight line in the form y=mx+c, where m is the gradient and c is the y-intercept. It explains that this equation represents a line with a slope of m that crosses the y-axis at c. It also describes how to determine if a given point lies on a line defined by this equation and how to find the equation of a line given certain information, such as a point and gradient or two points through which it passes.

4 EQUATION OF STRAIGHT LINE

Graph of y=mx+c
Its the equation of straight line with gradient, m, and the y-intercept, c. When c=0, y=mx is a straight line passing through the origin with gradient, m. When c 0, y=mx+c is a straight line cuttng the y axis at a distance of c from the origin.

5.4b POINTS ON A STRAIGHT LINE

If a point lies on a straight line, then the coordinates of the point satisfy the equation of the straight line. Eg: Determine whether point (3,1) lie on the straight line y=2x-5. x=3, y=1 y=2x-5 y=2(3)-5 y=1

5.4c EQUATION OF STRAIGHT LINE: y=mx+c

Given the value of gradient, m, and the yintercept, c, an equation of straight line y=mx+c can be formed.

5.4d DETERMINING THE GRADIENT AND THE Y-INTERCEPT

The gradient and the y-intercept can be determined straight from the equation.

5.4e FINDING THE EQUATION OF STRAIGHT LINE

a) Given 1 point and gradient: y-y1= m(x-x1) b) Given 2 points: y-y1 = y2-y1 x-x1 x2-x1 c) Given a line parallel to the x-axis: y= intersection of the line and y-axis d) Given a line parallel to the y-axis: x=intersection of the line and the x-axis

5.4f PONTS OF INTERSECTION

Can be determined by: a) Drawing the two straight lines b) Solving simultaneous equations
