Salt/Sulfur Dioxide Spray (Fog) Testing, Cyclic (ASTM G 85)

Touchstone can perform salt spray testing according to ASTM G85, which involves spraying a salt solution and sulfur dioxide gas inside a heated cabinet. The salt solution is either 5% synthetic sea salt or sodium chloride. The cabinet is maintained at 95°F and the sulfur dioxide gas is periodically injected over a typical testing cycle of 1 hour, four times per day. This cyclic salt spray/sulfur dioxide test is used to determine the time until perforation of thin aluminum alloy sheets.

Salt/Sulfur Dioxide Spray (Fog) Testing, Cyclic (ASTM G 85)

Touchstone has several salt spray cabinets, and can perform both standard and customized testing to ASTM G85, ASTM B117, ASTM B368 and other specifications. Salt/Sulfur Dioxide Spray (Fog) Testing is performed according to ASTM G 85, Annex A4. It is performed in a salt fog cabinet. Either synthetic sea salt or sodium chloride can be used to make up the solution (5% by wt.). The solution is atomized in the heated cabinet that is maintained at 95 F. The cabinet is equipped with a timing device and flowmeter/valve arrangement to periodically inject SO2 gas at a specified volume. A typical cycle is introduction of the gas for 1 hour four times a day (every 6 hours). This test is used to determine time to perforation in thin aluminum alloy sheet stock.
