Voltage swells are short increases in voltage above the nominal level, lasting from half a cycle to several seconds. They are caused by switching off large loads, capacitor banks energizing, or transferring loads between power sources. Voltage swells pose risks to sensitive equipment if protective measures are not taken.

Voltage Swells A voltage swell is an increase in the RMS voltage above the nominal voltage or a sliding reference voltage.

The increase lasts from half a cycle to several seconds. Switching off large loads, capacitor banks energizing, and transfer of loads from one power source to another cause voltage swells.
