CUT TO: INT. ELLAS HOUSE - SUMMER - DAY. ELLAs DAD (40s) struggles with a TV box in the garage. ELLA (Early 20s, late undergrad) is seated at the kitchen table, typing. A fan hums in the kitchen, and Ellas Dad is sweating bullets. ELLAS DAD Ella, go get your brother to help me move this. ELLA O.K. She finishes her sentence then walks through a few rooms, up some stairs, and to a door. ELLA Jonny! Dad says you need to come down and help him with the new T.V.! BEAT. ELLA Jon? EXT. LAKESIDE - MEZZANINE - FALL - EVENING. Ella is with her longtime boyfriend, OLIVER (Same age as Ella). Her purse sits on the floor. OLIVER So what then? ELLA I just need a break, Oliver. I still love you, but... BEAT. ELLA I need some space... ever since Jon... OLIVER It wasnt your fault, El. He-She interrupts. ELLA I should have known. It all seems so obvious now... You know, the day before, we went to Six Flags with our cousin Matt. He seemed so happy, so fucking happy when he was expected to be, when everyone was watching, but if for one second he thought no one was looking, he changed. This look came over him, like he was faking it all, like he was empty inside. I saw it. I saw it happen twice that day. Thought nothing of it, thought he was having a bad day or something. So maybe it is my fault. Maybe I could have talked to him, gotten him help, something, I dont know... OLIVER All I know is Jon loved you, Ella. He loved you so much. Maybe you kept him from going over the brink earlier. And if you need time alone to realize this, then take as much as you need. Ill be here when youre ready. BEAT. Ella smiles.
