Uplift Pressure

Uplift pressure is the upward pressure of water that flows or seeps through the body of a dam or its foundation. Any structure below the water table is subjected to uplift pressure due to Archimedes' principle. Uplift pressure reduces the effective stress between a structure and the soil, which can decrease sliding friction and contribute to overturning. It is important to account for uplift pressure in stability calculations, as water will seep through pores and cracks in the foundation or joints in the dam. Different methods have been proposed to calculate the area and intensity of uplift pressure, including the USBR and Indian Standard recommendations.

UPLIFT PRESSURE. . .

What is uplift pressure???

The uplift pressure is defined as the upward pressure of water as it flows or seeps through the body of the dam or foundation

Uplift pressure. . .
Any structure that extends below the water surface is subjected to uplift pressure from water. Uplift pressure below a free water table is depth times the unit weight of water which is the principle of Archimedes.

Importance
Uplift pressure in effect partially floats a structure, which reduces sliding friction between the structure and soil also contribute Since uplift pressure acts within the footprint of a structure, it also contribute to overturning.

Effective stress and uplift pressure. . .

Sliding friction is reduced because of reduction in effective stress contact pressure from the weight of the dam. Effective stress is the same total stress minus the uplift pressure. It is the effective stress that determines sliding friction.

Uplift pressure in dams. . .

Water has a tendency to seep through the pores and fissures of the foundation material. It also seeps through the joints between the body of dams and its foundation at base and through the pores of material in the body of dam Seeping water exerts pressure and must be accounted for in stability calculations.

Area over which uplift acts. . .

It has been a question of investigation. 2 thoughts: A value one-third or two-third of the area should be considered as effective over which uplift acts. Effective area may be taken as the total area to account for uplift.

U.S.B.R Recommendations:

Suggests the adoption of uplift pressure intensity equal to the hydrostatic pressure of water at the toe and heel joined by a straight line in between.

Indian Standard Recommendations:

According to Indian Standard, there are 2 constituent elements in uplift pressure: Area factor- percentage on which uplift acts Intensity factor- ratio which intensity of uplift pressure bears to intensity gradient.

Calculation of uplift pressure. . .

Flow nets can be used to determine the uplift pressure at the base of a hydraulic structure. The uplift force per unit length measured along the axis of weir can be calculated by finding the area of the pressure diagram.
