NewProgress - AMaths TB - ch11

This document contains a test on vectors in two-dimensional space with 5 questions. The test covers topics like: 1) Finding t if a point P is perpendicular to vector OB, given vectors OA and OB. 2) Finding the value of a and a unit vector in the direction of AB, given vectors OA and OB where the angle between them is 90 degrees. 3) Finding the cosine of an angle between two vectors and the value of λ if a point P is perpendicular to a vector. 4) Finding the value of m if the angle between two vectors is given in terms of cosine. 5) Finding products of lengths of vectors, the length of a perpendicular segment,

Vectors in Two-dimensional Space

Attempt ALL questions. The full marks of this test is 31.

Section A

1. Given that OA = 2i + j and OB = −3i + 2j . P is a variable point such that OP = OA + t AB ,

where t is a real number. Find t if OP is perpendicular to OB.
(4 marks)

2. Given that OA = 2i − j and OB = i + aj where a is real and ∠AOB = 90°.

(a) Find the value of a.
(b) Hence, find a unit vector in the direction of AB .
(6 marks)

3. In the figure, OA = 2i − j and OB = 3i + j. O is the origin.

(a) Find cos∠AOB.

(b) P is a point on OB such that OP : OB = λ : 1, where λ is real and AP is perpendicular
to OB.
Using (a), or otherwise, find λ.

4. If the angle between 3i + 4j and (m + 5)i + (2m – 3)j is θ, where cos θ = , find the value
5
of m.
