Course Title:
Description: This course is a general education course. It is an introduction to American Sign Language, the primary mode of communication in the Deaf Community in North America. Students will learn both expressive and receptive aspects of American Sign Language including the following: discuss and recognize personal information and get acquainted with others and everyday expressions in American Sign Language. Students will learn about aspects of Deaf culture, Deaf awareness, Deaf history and the unique features of ASL versus English. This class is a World Language Course. Course Requirements: Students will define ASL and the Deaf community Students will express themselves in American Sign Language about a variety topics including: self, school life, the world around them and their families Students will recognize signs in American Sign Language about a variety of topics: self, school life, the world around them and their families Students will participate in a variety of assessments of their knowledge of American Sign Language including videotaped expressive sign language, face-to-face conversational sign language, written assessments (tests). At times, students will be required to turn their voices off during signing practice time. No talking will be allowed during these times. This course will require students to take a midterm and final exam.
Classroom Rules: 1. Be respectful: Treat others as you would like to be treated. 2. Be prepared: Come to class daily with all materials (including but not limited to: notebook, homework, writing utensils). 3. Try your best: Participate in class using both expressive and receptive ASL skills. Take risks and learn new things! 4. Take responsibility for your learning: If you miss class, it is up to you to ask for notes or assignments that you missed. Discipline Procedure: First offense: a verbal warning is issued to student Second offense: the teacher will have a meeting with the student Third offense: parent will be contacted Fourth offense: Students will be sent to the office Grading: Performance tasks such as quizzes and tests will make up 80% of the final grade and practice exercises such as in-class practice in the and homework will make up 20%. Late homework will be accepted for partial credit. Late homework will receive a maximum score of 75%. Required Materials: 1. A one (1) subject notebook for in-class notes. 2. A class folder or binder to keep handouts organized in order to be prepared for written or performance assessments. 3. Students are responsible for bringing writing utensils to class, daily.
Optional Materials: PLEASE NOTE: THE FOLLOWING MATERIALS ARE NOT REQUIRED. Students may find an American Sign Language dictionary helpful. Please be sure that IF you purchase a dictionary for your child, that it is an ASL dictionary and not a signed English dictionary.
