Ds Assignment

The document provides information about two statistics exams taken by 20 students in 1995 including the mean, standard deviation, and correlation coefficient of the exam scores. It also gives the individual scores of one student, Kelly. It then shows the calculation of the regression line when the midterm exam scores are used to predict final exam scores. Additionally, it uses the normal distribution to calculate the number of students out of a sample of 500 that would fall into different weight ranges, given the mean and standard deviation of the students' weights.

DS Assignment Unit 1

Q1. During summer school, 1995, 20 students completed Statistics 301. Each student took a Midterm exam and a final exam. Summary statistics of the exam scores are given below. Exam Mean Standard Deviation Midterm 26.83, 6.22 Final 31.65, 6.82 In addition, the correlation coefficient equals 0.764. One of the students, Kelly, scored 25 on the midterm and 35 on the final. (a) Obtain the regression line for given information.

Sol:

N=20 Let mid term exams be denoted by x and Final by y x y 31.65

mean:

26.83

s..d :

6.22

6.82

correlation coefficient (r) = cov(x,y)/(x). ( y)

0.764= cov(x,y)/6.226.82 cov(x,y) = 32.4091 NOW, IF WE WANT TO FIND THE REGRESSION EQUATION

We will find the coefficient of regression which is the slope of the regression line if y is regressed on x denoted by say (b): Where b = 0.83 b=cov(x,y) / (x) . (x) =32.4091 6.22 X 6.22

now , equation wiil be ( y mean of y ) = 0.83 (x-mean of x) (y- 31.65) = 0.83 (x - 26.83)

When we are given Kelly scored 25=x so we can find out the value of y

Y=0.83 (25 - 26.83) +(31.65) when x mid term scored by Kelley is 25 then y (mid term score will be ) =

Y= 33

Now if we want to find out the regression line when x is regressed on y then;

Where slope (b) = cov(x,y)/ ( y). ( y) So, b will be 0.69

Regression line will be (x-mean of x) = b ( y mean of y ) x- 26.83 = 0.69 (y- 31.65) when y final scored by Kelley is 35 then x (mid term score will be ) = x= (0.69 x 3.35) + 26.83 x= 29.

Q2. The mean weight of 500 college students is 70 kg and the standard deviation is 3 kg. Assuming that the weight is normally distributed, determine how many students weigh: 1. Between 60 kg and 75 kg. 2.More than 90 kg. 3.Less than 64 kg. 4.Exactly 64 kg. 5.64 kg or less.

SOL: 1.

n(60 X

Z 1= X MEAN OF X /S.D = 60-70/3 = - 3.333 P(- 3.333 = P(3.333 BCZ OF SYMMETRY

APROX 0.50 SO N will be .50 Now Z( 2)= 75 70 /3 =1.67 P(0 =0.45254

N (70

= 0.45254 =226

So< P (60

2. N (X90) Z= 90-70 3 =6.67 0.5- P (0 = 0.5-0.5 =0

THEREFORE NO OF STUDENTS OF WEIGHT More than 90 kg IS 0 .

4.
