Level of Utilization of Web

This document discusses a study on the level of utilization of Web 2.0 tools for agricultural extension delivery in Nigeria. An online survey was conducted in 2011 of extension researchers in National Agricultural Research Institutes in Nigeria to assess their awareness and usage of Web 2.0 tools. The survey found that about 90% of respondents were not aware of most Web 2.0 tools. Lack of knowledge about the availability and use of these tools was identified as the major hindrance to their usage. The study recommends intensive training of agricultural researchers on using Web 2.0 tools to improve extension delivery.

Sub theme addressed: Sub-theme 3: ICTs in Agricultural Extension Education and delivery Abstract There are dozens of emerging interactive web services and applications, sometimes referred to as the participatory, social or readwrite web, but more commonly known as Web 2.0. Together, they are radically changing the ways we create, share, collaborate and publish digital information through the Internet. These new technical opportunities bring challenges as well as opportunities. An online survey of level of usage of Web 2.0 tools by extension researchers in National Agricultural Research Institutes (NARIs) in Nigeria was conducted in 2011. Online questionnaire forms was designed using googledoc (googledoc is one of the Web 2.0 tools) and was administered to the researchers through electronic mails. Five researchers were randomly selected from each of the 18 NARIs in Nigeria making a total of 90 respondents. Questions bordering on their level of awareness and utilization of Web 2.0 tools for agricultural extension delivery were asked. The result indicated that about 90% of the respondents were not aware of most of Web 2.0 tools. The major hindrance to the usage of these tools was lack of knowledge of its availability and how they can be used to facilitate extension activities. This study therefore recommends intense training of agricultural researchers in the usage of Web 2.0 tool for effective and efficient extension delivery.
