Richard Stallman announces the GNU Project in 1983 to create an open-source operating system. By 1991, most of the GNU operating system was complete except for the kernel. Linus Torvalds develops the Linux kernel, combining it with the GNU system to create a complete GNU/Linux operating system. Linux has many powerful features including supporting many users and running many tasks simultaneously, providing a secure file system, and offering job control and interprocess communication capabilities. It also includes graphical user interfaces, networking utilities, and software for system administration and development.
