Part Modeling Assignment 1: Objective: Extruding To Create Solid Parts and Edit Them To Obtain The Desired Objects

This document provides instructions for a part modeling assignment involving creating solid parts with features and editing them in I-DEAS. Specifically, it instructs the user to: 1) Create a 200x200x200 cube and cut a dovetail slot on the top face as a feature. 2) Cut another slot at 90 degrees to the first on the bottom face of the cube. 3) For part two, create another cube and cut a slot, then use the feature copy command to instance the first slot onto the opposite face.

PART MODELING ASSIGNMENT 1

Objective: The aim of this assignment is to introduce part modeling concepts like, features, extruding to create solid parts and edit them to obtain the desired objects

PART I
Tasks: 1. In this exercise we begin with creating a simple cube of size 200 X 200 X 200 units. 2. Cut a dovetail slot(an example of feature) on the top face of the cube. 3. Cut another slot of same size on the bottom face at 90 to the first slot.

Figure 1: Cube with dovetail slots Procedure: 1. Create an origin-centered cube by selecting Parts icon to open the Parts Catalog. Select Block, change the Length, Height and Depth values to 200 each as shown in Fig. 2.

4. Select the Extrude command by pressing on its icon. Make selection of curves corresponding to the closed shape in Fig. 4. In the Extrude dialog box (see Fig. 5) select the correct vector to indicate slot direction, fill in the depth of the slot as 200 units and select the cut operation. When you press OK, notice that the slot is actually created.

PART II
Tasks:
4. In this exercise we again create a simple cube of size 200 X 200 X 200 units. 5. Cut a slot as above and using feature copy command of I-DEAS, create the second slot on the opposite face as an instance of the first slot.
