HOLD ON TO THESE SHEETS ALL YEAR!

Mr. Carroll 7th Grade English & Hawaiian History Class

Dear 7th Graders and Parents, WELCOME! Im very excited to start the school year. I hope you are as well. I know that this will be a fantastic year for all of us. We are all going to get smarter, more confident, and hopefully have a great time along the way. I know by this time in your school career you understand what appropriate and inappropriate behavior is. I dont think we need to spend too much time going over that. So lets keep it simple. In this class, just follow the four Ps:
Be PROMPT POLITE PREPARED PRODUCTIVE

Prompt: come to school on time, arrive to class on time, be in classroom before bell rings Prepared: carry pencil/pen, notebooks/binder, bring homework, projects, and study well Polite: use appropriate language, treat peers with respect, and treat teachers like adults Productive: begin Do Now immediately, ask questions, work neatly, and hold high expectations

But most importantly

WORK HARDTHATS IT

MATERIALS: 2 Composition Notebooks 1 STRONG Folder (preferably plastic) One 1-1/2 Binder Dividers Highlighters Binder Pencil case Pens and Pencils Headphones (We often use iPads and Computers at school and many students prefer to use their own headphones. If they do not have or want to bring, the school does have some which can be provided)

English Class
Our #1 goal in English class this year to become better readers and writers. Through literacy, we empower ourselves with the tools to be productive, successful, and happy members of our communities. The books we choose to read are terrific. In addition, the writing we create will have meaning and importance to your life. Most of the time in English we will start the period by reading our IR (Independent Reading) books or writing in our marble notebooks, so make sure you have your IR BOOK and WRITERS NOTEBOOK every day in class. I will do my best to honor your time between classes and recess. In return I expect you to honor the time I spend with you between bells. I will not tolerate students socializing in my room before class, and expect students to remain seated until I give the OK to leave each period.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Grading
Students enrolled in an ELA class receive TWO SEPARATE GRADES: One grade for WRITING and one grade for READING. English is an 80 minute period. Social Studies Class

Our #1 goal in Social Studies class this year is to develop critical thinking skills through engaging in rigorous discovery and discussion. We will be focusing on Hawaiian History from colonization until the modern era. More specifically, we will be focusing on the social, political, and economic effects of the colonization of the Hawaiian Islands.

Discipline Plan
If a student doesnt follow our classroom expectations, the school discipline system will go into effect. Mr. Gates and I have tweaked the system to place more emphasis on Discipline Sheets in order to correct misbehavior early and often. It works as follows: First Offense: Second Offense: Third Offense: Fourth Offense: Verbal Warning Recess Detention DIScipline Sheet and Recess Detention DIScipline Sheet and TCN

REMEMBER: For every 3 DIScipline Sheets received, within one quarter, the student will be given a Teacher Communication Notice (TCN) which must be returned to the students Homeroom/Advisory Teacher within 2 days signed by a parent/guardian. Failure to do so will result in an Office Referral and additional consequences. Receiving 2 TCNs within one quarter disqualifies the student from participating in quarterly incentive/clean card activity. If a student is severely disruptive, he or she will be immediately sent to Administration.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Parent Communication There are a few basic ways that I communicate with parents: 1) Parent Newsletter: This is emailed out to parents every Monday afternoon and includes all the homework for the week. 2) Grade Checks: Everyone two weeks, I will send home a hard copy of your students grades. You need to sign this and return it to me by the date specified on the forms. 3) Kiku Text: This is a FREE service that allows parents to receive text message updates from me. I will only use this as reminders when important projects are due and you are not required to use the service. It is optional- but a nice reminder for you and your kids! 4) Edline: Your students updated grade will be posted to EdLine every Monday afternoon. Edline is a simple way for you to always know how your child is doing in all of their classes. There is A LOT of information here to absorb the first week, but it is important for you to know what is expected of you and your student. I do not want to surprise you

HOLD ON TO THESE SHEETS ALL YEAR! with something that you were unaware of during the year. Please share your ideas, questions, and/or concerns with me today, or any day throughout the year. I am looking forward to a productive and enjoyable year! Mr. Carroll
