Meteorological Instruments

This document discusses various meteorological instruments used to measure atmospheric conditions. It describes barometers which measure air pressure using either an aneroid chamber or mercury column. Thermometers measure temperature while hygrometers like psychrometers use two thermometers to determine relative humidity. Anemometers measure wind speed, often using propeller-style designs. Wind vanes indicate wind direction and are commonly weathercocks. The document provides examples of each instrument and quizzes readers to test their understanding.

Barometer

Barometer

Used to determine atmospheric pressure

Two Types
Aneroid Barometer - Expansion or contraction of the vacuum chamber, caused by a change in air pressure, forces the pointer to move. Mercurial Barometer It uses a long glass tube, open at one end and closed at the other. Air pressure is measured by observing the height of the column of mercury in the tube.

Thermometer

is a device that measures temperature or temperature gradient using a variety of different principles

Hygrometer or Psychrometer
Hygrometers are instruments used for measuring relative humidity. A simple form of a hygrometer is specifically known as a "psychrometer" and consists of two thermometers . Relative humidity is a term used to describe the amount of water vapor that exists in a gaseous mixture of air and water.

Anemometer

anemometer is a device for measuring wind speed, and is one instrument used in a weather station.

Wind Vane

A weather vane, also called a wind vane, is a movable device attached to an elevated object such as a roof for showing the direction of the wind. Very often these are in the shape of cockerels and are called weather cocks. Arrows are also popular, but a multitude of designs have been used.

Prop Anemometer

Helicoid propeller anemometer incorporating a wind vane for orientation.
