Lille is the fourth-largest metropolitan area in France after those of Paris, Lyon and Marseille. Lille is situated on the Dele River, near France's border with Belgium. It is the capital of the Nord-Pas de Calais region and the prefecture of the Nord department. The city of Lille, had a population of 226,014 as recorded by the 2006 census.

The land area of Lille is 39.51 sq. km. Populationwise it ranks tenth in France. The time zone in the city is CET (GMT +1) It is the principal city of the Lille Metropole which also includes Roubaix, Tourcoing and numerous suburban communities.

The city's most major association Football club, Lille OSC, currently plays in Ligue 1, the highest level of Football in France. The club has won eight major national trophies and regularly feature in the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa league. In the 2010-11 season, Lille won the league and cup double.

Lille occupies the first place in France in area of textile industry, the second one in number of literature editions, the third one in area of machinery, electric industry, chemical and pharmaceutical industry and medicine, the fourth one in food production industry. Lille is the third on importance financial center of France. It takes the second place in area of insurance activity. There are 2560 organizations which provide consulting and insurance servicing there.

Lille is the city of students. The most prestigious educational institutions are the University of Lille, the High School of Journalistic (the second in the country after the one in Paris), Lille Regional Hospital University center, National Regional Conservatory etc.

It is one of the largest scientific universities in France.
