Special cables
for Hybrid vehicle development

For more than three years now Kromberg & Schubert support the development and production of hybrid vehicles in small series at various OEM and system suppliers. Cables designed for operating voltages of up to 600 V rms are utilised here. Already for production of the individual insulated conductors according to LV 112 and ISO 6722, increased inline test voltages are stipulated for reliable detection of insulation defects and undershoots of the minimum tolerated wall thickness. Within the scope of a type test, an additional voltage test of 5 kV/5 minutes is carried out on the finished cable to ensure that only cables with high electrical safety margin are delivered. The qualification of the sheathed cables is then carried out in accordance with LV 212 or ISO 14572. After the further processing capability under serial production conditions has also been verified, the cables are approved and released by the OEM.

The sheath colour is generally orange, for easy recognition of these cables in the workshop and in the case of an accident. Depending on the particular application and choice of routing in the vehicle, cables are required for 125C / 3000 h as well as for up to 200C / 3000 h operating temperature range. For example, these cables are utilised for the oil pump and for the air conditioning system compressor. The oil pump is operated with a three-phase electric motor, whereas the air conditioning compressor is operated with a DC motor. Although the present demand for these cables is still moderate, we are certain that this is an investment for the future.
