    An Alumni-Supported Internship Program

    A college alumnus doesnt need to donate a large amount of money to his or her school in order to impact the colleges future students. Considering that internships are one of the most important things a student can do during their time as an undergraduate, alumni can make quite a difference by helping improve their colleges internship programs. There are several ways an alumnus can do this: By offering an internship through his or her workplace. Whether a college alumnus works for a small non-profit with just a few employees or a large corporation such as Pepsi or Google, he or she can ensure that a student gets the work experience he or she needs. An internship is a positive opportunity for both the intern as well as the company employing the intern. By providing lectures at his or her old university. Whether speaking about topics such as professionalism in the workplace or making the most of an internship, a college alumnus can provide firsthand insight into post-college life. While a professor might be able to provide students with academic information, a college alumnus can explain information learned through real-life experience. By setting up networking opportunities and mixers. Take a cue from Ed2010, which is a community of magazine editors who help students find a foothold in the magazine industry. Ed2010 often hosts happy hours and various events where students are encouraged to meet other interns and editors. Alumni who graduated with degrees in specific majors can gather together to do the same for students and interns in their old departments.

    Its that time of year again!!! FOOTBALL TIME!! With our wolverines pulling Join our Facebook Page off a 10-2 season and making it to a BSC bowl game, the Sugar Bowl! Its easy to say that MICHIGAN FOOTBALL is back!! Finally we have all been waiting for this for a while now! A good way to reconnect with some of your Benefits of Being an college buddies is by coming to the Communications Alumni Tailgate! This Alumni will first take place at Churchills right across from campus, and depending upon how many people show up we can change locations and if needed because of how many people join! We may even be able to go down to Ann Arbor and tailgate! (more on pg. 2)

    COM Department: Friend Raising, not Fundraising

    Kristin Arntz, secretary for the Department of Communication and Visual Arts at University of Michigan, Flint, is passionate about giving back to the school she once attended. The Communication department played a large roll Kristins success and helped to land her a job at the university today. Kristin is part of a project that is working towards increasing communication between the COM department and its alumnis. We are friend raising, not fundraising is what Kristin told a group of PR students last week when speaking at the University about the recent project. The departments goal is to encourage alumni to give back to their university by helping current students with internships or job opportunities upon graduation. Kristin was inspired to help head up the program because she has a personal connection to the university and professor Tony McGill helped her to get where she is today. She wants to give other students the same chance by helping them in the same way Tony helped her. Flint has a younger crowd than it did a few years ago and it is important to get the students of U of M involved in the city surrounding their campus. Kristen touched on how important the student experience is while attending school because those who enjoyed their time here will want to give back and allow others in the future to enjoy their time at the university as well. The department will consider the project a success if they are able to engage in communication with 10% of their COM alumni at the end of the year, which will be a 5% increase from where they are currently.     This is a great time to cheer on the Wolverines and connect with old friends that are all busy with their lives! But we can all connect with one thing we all have in common!! FOOTBALL!! We are open to suggestions and are not interested in trying to make money- lets all remember this is a friendraiser not a fundraiser! Some other ideas we have were to have a tailgate party at the University and have some food brought over from Churchills and maybe have a person bring a friend that went to the university and a dish to pass! Like stated earlier these are all just some ideas

    Interning Your Way to a Career


    When filling out a job application, you have to prove to the person doing the hiring that you are the best person for that job positionor at least, a good person to interview for the opening. That person is looking for leadership skills, a strong academic background, and most importantly, experience. Internships are a great way to build that experience. Many organizations offer internship programs to students for school credit or for pay. An internship places a student in a work environment on a part-time or full-time basis.
