Lesson 5 Problems

1. Predict the major products of the following reations a) 2,3-dimethyl-2-butene with hydrochloric acid

b) cis-2-Butene with hydrobromic acid

c) 1-butene with hydrochloric acid (observing Markovnikovs Rule!)

d) 3-methyl-1-butene with hydrobromic acid (dont forget the hydride shift!)

e) vinylcyclobutane with hydrrobromic acid (with an alkyl shift!)

2. Predict the major products of the following reactions a. 2,3-dimethyl-2-butene with molecular bromine in methylene chloride

Lesson 5 Problems
b. 3,4-dimethyl-3-hexene with molecular chlorine in methylene chloride

3. Some solvents can act as nucleophiles in the second step of a halogenation reaction like those in question 2. Predict the product(s) which might form if the solutions from question 2 were prepared in water (a nucleophilic solvent) rather than methylene chloride (a non-nucleohilic solvent). 4. Predict the products of the following reactions a. Hydrogenation of cis-2-butene using platinum on carbon as a catalyst

b. Hydrogenation of cis-3,4-dimethyl-3-hexene with platinum on carbon

c. Hydrogenation of 2-methylbutene with platinum on carbon as a catalyst
