Gesture-Enabled Interactive Computing Device (Genic) : Proposal

The proposal discusses improving the computational speed of a gesture-enabled interactive computing device (GeNIC) in three ways: 1) Performing computations in the cloud to reduce hardware costs and improve battery life but increase developer costs and rely on network bandwidth. 2) Reducing input size like framerate and resolution to improve software but make tracking more difficult. 3) Using better hardware optimized for throughput computing like massively parallel GPUs to increase speed but reduce battery life. The proposal also discusses expanding to 3D capabilities using OpenGL but with potential performance impacts.

Gesture-enabled Interactive Computing Device (GeNIC)

Proposal

Supervisor: Dr. Rabia Bakhteri

1. Working on computational speed: 1.1 Computation in the cloud / Virtual Machines Pros: i) Lower hardware cost on consumers side ii) Longer battery life Cons: i) Higher costs on developer or producer end ii) Limited by network bandwidth Suggestions: OpenCV on Amazon Web Server or Windows Azure 1.2 Reducing input size Pros: i) Software improvement does not cost anything extra Cons: i) Will make tracking difficult / less accurate Suggestions: Reducing framerate, resolution 1.3 Better hardware / Optimizing for throughput computing: Pros: i) Faster Conns: i) Poor battery life Suggestions: Massively parallel computing device (Cuda / OpenCL) Example of gray-scaling on a NVIDIA TESLA hardware on Amazon Web Service

2. 3D capabilities: Pros: i) Expending application to graphics side Suggestions: OpenGL, 3D with WPF, Cons:

Performance hit on the application 3.
