Equiflow Autonomous Inflow Control Device: Next Generation Icd Increases Recoverable Reserves and Extends Well Production
Horizontal wellbores are oen favored by operators for exploiting narrow, oil-bearing formations to maximize contact with the pay zone. However, when production causes unwanted gas and/or water to migrate to the wellbore or uneven production distribution results due to pressure drop in the tubing, operators turn to Halliburtons EquiFlow autonomous inow control device (AICD) to both delay and reduce the ow of unwanted uids, such as water and gas, into the horizontal wellbore and balance production through the interval.
individual dynamic uid componentsa viscosity selector, a ow switch, and a ow restrictor function together to allow restricted or unrestricted ow of uid. e viscosity selector utilizes a system of ow paths which, based on uid viscosity, density and velocity, identies the uid(s) that is owing through the AICD and then divides the total ow among two ow paths. Based o the uid selectors output the ow switch, or uid crossroad, directs the majority of the selected uid down one of two separate paths based on the uids properties. Finally, the uid restrictor restricts the ow of unwanted uid (gas and/or water) from entering the wellbore, yet provides very little restriction to the production of the desired uid. e EquiFlow AICD is designed to be a simple, reliable and cost-eective solution to the limitations of passive inow control by maximizing reservoir performance, minimizing undesired uid production, and increasing reliability through design simplicity.
e EquiFlow AICD is Halliburtons next generation inow control device (ICD) which utilizes innovative dynamic uid technology to dierentiate between uids owing through the device in order to maximize oil production. e AICD works like a passive ICD during oil production, yet restricts the production of water and gas at breakthrough to minimize water and gas cuts dramatically. It uses no moving parts, does not require downhole orientation and utilizes the dynamic properties of the uid to direct ow. e AICD technology employs an engineered system of ow paths and channels to control uid ow. Benets Maximizes ultimate recovery Increases reliability through design simplicity Minimizes undesired uid production Helps reduce cost and risk associated with unwanted uid production Delays onset of unwanted water or gas production Features Operates autonomously Contains no moving parts, electronics, or connections to the surface Requires no intervention Requires no downhole orientation Will cease ow restriction if unwanted uid recedes Designs available to produce oil and restrict either water or gas Utilizes innovative dynamic uid technology to direct ow Functions as a standard ICD prior to water/gas breakthrough Each device functions independently for precise response to the reservoir Applications e EquiFlow AICD is designed to improve completion performance and eciency by delaying the production of unwanted uids from high productivity zones throughout the length of a completion. Once water/gas breakthrough occurs, the AICD signicantly restricts unwanted production, which allows increased oil production from other compartments in the completion. It is installed as part of the completion string and is highly benecial for any well in which production needs to be balanced over long horizontal reservoirs or in formations with high permeability variances. Typical applications include wells experiencing heel-toe eects, breakthrough of water/gas, permeability dierences, and water or gas challenges dealing with horizontal or layered reservoirs.
