Torque Converters: Torque Converter Is The Connection Between The Engine and Automatic Transmission. A Converter Is
A torque converter is the connection between the engine and automatic transmission. A converter is a modified fluid coupling which transfers and multiplies rotating power (torque) from a vehicles engine to the automatic transmission.
Hub
The hub is the component of the converter that inserts into the pump of the transmission. The hub drives the transmission pump using flats, slots, or ears, depending on application.
Impeller
The impeller is also called the primary pump. This half of the outer shell of the converter has curved fins/blades attached to the inside. The impeller is the driving member of the converter. Typically, the converter hub is incorporated into the impeller.
Stator
The stator is a component of the torque converter that is separate and independent from the outer shell of the converter, and functions as a torque multiplier. When installed, the stator is splined onto the stator support shaft which is part of the transmission pump. The stator typically contains a roller clutch or sprag assembly that only allows one way rotation.
Turbine
The turbine is also separate and independent from the outer shell of the converter. The turbine is the driven member of the converter that is splined to the transmissions input shaft.
Clutch Piston
This uses a spring dampened piston and a friction element to achieve lockup. Lockup describes the converter function where a friction element inside the converter is hydraulically applied so that a direct and mechanical link is made between the engine and transmission. The piston can use a single or multi friction element.
Front Cover
The cover is also called the lid. This half of the outer shell of the converter mounts to the engine drive plate. The cover typically has the pilot and mounting pads (or studs) incorporated into it.
Mount
This is how the torque converter is connected to the flexplate or flywheel, which connects to the engine. Various applications may use pads, bolts or studs for mounting.
