Orientation- A Learning Experience

Introduction: The Orientation of Symbiosis Institute of Management Studies is one of its kinds among the BSchools in India. The basic idea behind the session is to make students go through the stress & time management so that they inculcate these characteristics at the beginning of the session & which would be help them to groom into good managers. It is a part academic programme & is approved by the institution & has been a tradition since many years. The responsibility of conducting the orientation was with the council members & other seniors who were available in the campus. The session stretched over 3 weeks & this was an amazing experience of a lifetime. The Beginning: When I joined SIMS, I was in a dilemma whether to join the institute or not. The institute rankings were not great & I had to do a lot of research about the opportunities & career options available at the end of two years after MBA. I talked to the SIMS seniors who joined my previous employer (KPIT Cummins) as management trainees & they gave the actual insights of the college that helped me in making one the most crucial decisions of life. 31st May 2013 was my last working day & 2nd June 2013 was the first day at SIMS. The orientation session started off with the SIMS haircut at the Ideal saloon & then the briefing by director sir who introduced us to the orientation session which was shocker for the so called student managers. The next day started off with the inaugural ceremony & Mr Unnikrishnan, CEO Thermax, was the chief guest. He gave an excellent speech & introduced us to the world of MBA & the day passed. At 6 pm the batch meet started & we were given the thorough details of the orientation. The key highlights of the orientation were: Boys to be dressed in plain formal shirts, laced formal shoes with dark coloured socks & face clean shaved. Girls to be dressed in sarees with closed footwear & no hair flicks. Greet your seniors with your name, roll no & batch details Individual, trimate & pentamate assignments No slouching & movements when seated in the auditorium Daily morning PT & daily activities started at 5:30 am except Sundays Compulsory attendance for every batch meet, other meets & fall-in under the dome No movement outside the campus without the permission Case studies & presentations as an assignment for the pentamates Failing to follow any of the rules or finishing any of the assignment was rewarded with a penalty assignment.

The daily overloaded schedule made people tired & sleepless. Student managers started enjoying the daily assignments initially but later as the intensity of the session increased; some of them could not handle the pressure & they invented their own unique excuses to skip the daily dose of orientation. But the characteristics of team work & planning started building up in the student managers & they realised the importance of time management. The Next Phase: The orientation was in full swing & student managers started counting the number of days left for the orientation to end. Different activities such as yoga, dance, sports, etc were a part of orientation session which the student managers really enjoyed. Some of them also got hurt. Then came the trek to the Sinhgad fort. As most of the student managers were new to the Pune, they were looking forward to this trek & were curious to explore the places around Pune. It rained heavily that day early in the morning but the director sir had given the clear instructions whether it rains or not the trek had to be done. Climbing uphill was a challenge for us & returning was a cakewalk. Groups of 10 people were formed & they had report at every check point along with the team that showcased the team spirit. The legs were cramped next day & most of us missed the pt exercise. Some of the take away from orientation: Taught us to manage time in the efficient way. Also we realized the how planning & timely completion of task is important as the deadlines & penalty assignments for the defaulters kept us on the toes during the orientation. Trimate & pentamate assignments facilitated the interaction between the students of their own division as well as among different divisions. Some of the corporate disciplines were practised that made students realise their importance & inculcate those etiquettes. Made student managers familiar with MBA world & the SIMS way of life Established good as well as bad relationship with seniors. Some people cursed while others praised. The early morning exercises & the yoga session improved the physical as well as the mental fitness Students got familiar with the level of expectations from the industry & the faculty of the institute The qualities of good manager starting building up in the students. Not every aspect was the orientation was taken in a positive way by the students. Some of them had an argument with seniors as they thought they were getting ragged. Some of them questioned the need for that haircut & its purpose. Most of them complained the lack of sleep which disturbed the classroom schedule. People also coined SIMS as Symbiosis Institute of Military Studies.

Conclusion: The entire experience was enriching & unique. I had never experienced such a challenging situation (physical as well as mental stress) in my previous academics. I became disciplined & organised. Time management, punctuality, team work, presentation skills, etc orientation taught us all. All these virtues are extremely important & thanks to SIMS orientation I have inculcated these virtues. I have realised the expectation from the corporate world & will mould myself to those expectations. The student council was instrumental in conducting orientation session & they guided juniors in the tough situations. Though some people cursed them but ultimately they are the ones who will mentor us for the MBA journey. Finally the orientation ended on 20 June 2013 when the batch meet was about to end. Crowd was yelling & dancing on the stage. All of them ran towards Symphony for the party. That was the moment of celebration for everyone. Some people said they will miss those orientation days while others were relieved. Overall it was a platform for immense learning apart from academics.
