    There are 5 moments when hand hygiene should be performed: 1) before patient contact, 2) before aseptic tasks, 3) after patient contact, 4) after contact with patient surroundings, and 5) after contact with body fluids. Hand rubs containing alcohol are the recommended products for hand hygiene except when hands are visibly soiled, caring for a patient with vomiting or diarrhea, direct contact with body fluids without gloves, or during certain outbreaks, in which case hands should be cleaned with soap and water. Proper hand hygiene should always be practiced.

    Hand rubs containing alcohol are the recommended products for ensuring effective hand hygiene in all patient care situations except when:1 Hands are visibly soiled The patient is experiencing vomiting and/or diarrhoea There is direct hand contact with any body fluids i.e. if gloves have forgotten to be worn There is an outbreak of Norovirus, Clostridium difficile or other diarrhoeal illnesses In these instances hands should always be cleaned with liquid soap and warm running water.
