Raci Model in ITIL Service Management

The RACI model is a tool used to define roles and responsibilities when designing processes. It assigns individuals or roles one of four responsibilities: Responsible (R) for doing the work, Accountable (A) for ensuring it gets done, Consulted (C) for providing input, or Informed (I) after the fact. The model helps ensure accountability and that tasks have owners by only allowing one accountable role per activity, while requiring at least one responsible role to show the work is getting done.

RACI Model (also known as Responsibility Assignment Matrix | RAM/Linear Responsibility Chart | LRC) A useful tool to assist the

definition of the roles and responsibilities when designing processes is the RACI Model. RACI stands for: R Responsibility (actually does the work for that activity but reports to the function or position that has an A against it). Those who do the work to achieve the task. A Accountability (also approver or final approving authority) (is made accountable for ensuring that the action takes place, even if they might not do it themselves). This role implies ownership. The one ultimately answerable for the correct and thorough completion of the deliverable or task, and the one who delegates the work to those responsible. C Consult (sometimes counsel) (advice/ guidance / information can be gained from this function or position prior to the action taking place). Those whose opinions are sought, typically subject matter experts; and with whom there is two-way communication. I Inform (the function or position that is told about the event after it has happened). Those who are kept up-to-date on progress, often only on completion of the task or deliverable; and with whom there is just one-way communication.

A RACI Model is used to define the roles and responsibilities of various Functions in relation to the activities of Incident Management. General Rules that exist: Only 1 A per Row can be defined (ensures accountability, more than one A would confuse this). At least 1 R per Row must be (shows that actions are taking p lace), with more than one being appropriate where there is shared responsibility.
