Outline For Presentation Week 10

The document discusses learner autonomy and how to motivate IELTS students to take responsibility for their own learning. It defines learner autonomy as a learner's ability to take charge of their own learning. The document argues that setting clear goals for students can motivate them and help develop learner autonomy. It suggests teachers should provide skills and resources for independent practice, while also advising students to spend more time on vocabulary and grammar. Both positive and negative outcomes are possible, with some students learning effectively through self-study while others may feel overwhelmed by the workload.

Outline for presentation week 10 Theory of learner autonomy: people's ability to take charge of their own learning (Holec,

1981) autonomous learners are those explicitly accept responsibility for their learning (Little, 1991) Benson and Voler (1997) gave the definition of learner autonomy as the ability to take their personal responsibility for learning.

Focus on goal setting to encourage students motivation, from which they can develop learner autonomy Argument: whether motivation can help students responsible for their own study or put more stress on them Situation to analyse: encouraging learner autonomy in Ielts Students will try to study better and be responsible for their study when they know exactly their goal, which motivates them to learn for themselves. How to motivate them: a talk between teacher and learners to no their purpose to learn Ielts. Commonly most learners want to take Ielts exam to study abroad or for immigration. So they need to get the score as high as possible. They themselves have motivation in learning, so teachers role in class is teaching and helping them understand and acquire appropriate skills for taking Ielts tests. Besides, teacher needs to help them take their own responsibility to learn. *Let them be interested in studying English and understand that getting higher score needs much effort from themselves=> provide them with knowledge and skills to practice by themselves in reading and listening/ read more and get ideas for writing and speaking so suggest some websites for reading. *Advise them to spend more time studying vocabulary and grammar Findings: Positive: some students learn very hard, make progress and get the score they need. Negative: some try to learn too much and become stressed and confused as they consider there is too much to do with Ielts.
