Enzymes are proteins that catalyze biochemical reactions and are now widely used in textile processing. Amylase enzymes desizing and cellulase enzymes modify cellulosic fabrics through de-pilling or permanent softening. Enzymes have also been used to wash-off reactive dyes from fabrics to conserve energy and water. Most textile processing enzymes are produced by cultured fungi or bacteria, but are not readily available to textile artists.

Enzymes have recently found application is wash-off of fabric dyed with reactive dyes, to conserve energy and water.
