Astable Multivibrator

The document describes an experiment to study an astable multivibrator circuit using an NE555 timer IC. The objective is to understand the operation of the NE555 timer in astable mode where it oscillates continuously without any stable states. The circuit diagram and components used like resistors, capacitors, LED, breadboard, and CRO are listed. The procedure involves building the astable multivibrator circuit and making observations of the output waveform using a CRO. The results are recorded in an observation table measuring the on-time, off-time, duty cycle, and comparing practical vs theoretical duty cycle values.

Name of Experiment: Study of Timer Circuit using NE555 & configuration for Astable Multivibrator Objective: To study an astable multivibrator circuit using NE555 timer Theory: The 555 is an IC timing circuit that can produce time delays or oscillations. The timer circuit can operate in 1 of the 2 modes either as a monostable multivibrator or as an astable multivibrator. The IC is available in various packages & the 1 we use is an 8-pin mini DIP. Astable Multivibrator has no stable states, which means that it cannot remain indefinitely in either state. Hence it oscillates when operated in the astable mode.

Fig 2: Circuit Diagram of Astable Multivibrator Procedure: 1) Make the circuit connections on the bread board with the required components as shown in the circuit diagram. 2) Check & fix the power supply to the required value before connecting it to the circuit. 3) All the connections should be neat & tight. 4) Make the required observation with the help of CRO & draw the waveforms. Experimental Result: Observation Table of Astable Multivibrator: RA RB TON TOFF Duty Cycle(D) (Practical Value)= TON/(TON+TOFF)*100% D (Theoretical Value)

Discussion: In astable multivibrator circuit the exact frequency as per theoretical calculations are not always obtained due to considerable amount of tolerance offered by the time producing components. To get the accurate time for a particular frequency of

desired duty cycle the charge discharge capacitors used should be of very low leakage type like Tantalum capacitors. Questions: 1) What is the difference between Pulse & Square wave ? 2) What are the different applications of astable circuits ? 3) Draw the block diagram of 555 timer.
