5 Non-Linear Problem

A 100 mm x 5 mm x 5 mm tension specimen is pulled at the top with a 10kN load while constrained at the bottom. The stress-strain curve shows the material has a linear elastic region up to 225 MPa with a Young's modulus of 75 GPa, then yields and becomes plastic and nonlinear. Key data points in the stress-strain curve are provided.

Introduction

A simple tension speciment 100 mm X 5 mm X 5 mm is constrained at the bottom and has a load pulling on the top. The material properties is taken from experimental results and the stress-strain curve for the substance is shown above. Note the linear section up to approximately 225 MPa where the Young's Modulus is constant (75 GPa). The material then begins to yield and the relationship becomes plastic and nonlinear. P=10KN
