Principals Corner by Tamara Hallee
Spring has sprung! It is hard to think spring with all this snow on the ground. I hope that the warm weather arrives soon! With that being said, please continue to make sure your child(ren) is coming to school with the proper attire. We still have a lot of snow on the playground. It is often hard for the children to concentrate if they have cold wet feet or clothing. We need your help!!! We are working with the bus company in order to improve behavior on the bus. The bus will be handing out yellow bus PAWS for positive bus behavior. The PBIS team recently reviewed proper bus behavior with all students using the following: B ack to back, bottom to bottom U se respectful quiet voices S afe hands and feet It would be greatly appreciated if you would also talk to your child(ren) regarding safety and behavior on the bus. Thanks for working as a team with us and the bus company! Quick reminder: Please stop whenever the bus is loading or unloading and has the stop sign displayed.

PTA NEWS
Happy Spring Maple Wood Families! Last month we had a yummy spaghetti dinner. The PTA would like to thank Kohl's, Fogarty's, Panera Bread, and all the volunteers who donated tasty desserts. The PTA could not do it without our amazing volunteers. Everyone enjoyed Literacy Night- one of Maple Wood's favorite nights. The kids were so excited to wear their pajamas, hear some great stories, and they all chose a book to take home with them. We are grateful to the readers that came out and supported Literacy Night. and your support of Maple Wood. Some dates to keep in mind for the next couple months: April 3rd is Math Night. There will be stations set up, smart boards, and lots of math games. Parents will get a taste of Every Day Math along with the kids. The Spring Book Fair will be May 6th-10th. If you are interested in volunteering please contact Beth Day at 692-6912 or [email protected]

We are looking forward to spring! Maple Wood PTA

Exciting News! Childlight Yoga, will be our Artist in Residence this year! Childlight plans to visit all of the classrooms at Maple Wood. Some will be visited for about a half hour on April 30th and others on May 2nd. Their website mentions that yoga for children and adolescents promotes selfawareness, self-acceptance and selfconfidence, the foundations of exceptional learning and a lifetime of health and wellness. Lisa Flynn and the ChildLight Yoga team, have been successfully sharing the gifts of yoga with children for over 7 years at dozens of schools and studios. They have traveled and trained nearly 800 others around the world, and recently launched the Yoga4Classrooms program. And this nationally recognized program is based right here on the Seacoast!

News from Nurse Jenna

What one thing can influence your childs success in school, positive attitude, good behavior, and ability to fight off illness? A good nights sleep. Recent studies show that more than half of school age children are not getting enough sleep. Sleep deprivation in children can lead to poor performance in school, difficulty with memory and inability to focus, and trouble organizing themselves and their work. Lack of sleep also lowers the effectiveness of the immune system, resulting in more illness and missed days of school and work. Behavior problems and poor impulse control also result from not enough sleep. Children can vary in their needs for sleep. Some may find that nine and a half hours are enough, while others will need up to eleven hours to feel rested and perform at their best. How can you tell how much sleep your child needs? If your child is easy to waken in the morning, appears rested, and shows no signs of daytime sleepiness, they are probably getting enough sleep. If they are groggy during the day, exhibit behavior problems, decline in schoolwork, or are hard to wake up in the morning, they probably need more shut eye. Your childs teacher can be a good resource, as they will have many opportunities to observe if your child is sleepy or groggy during quiet class activity. There are many ways to encourage a good nights sleep: Establishing a bedtime routine that you can maintain consistently is a good start. Eliminate caffeinated drinks. TV and video games have been proven to cause sleep problems, so shut these off an hour before bedtime. Dont forget to set a good example by getting enough sleep yourself. If the whole family makes a good nights sleep a priority, everyone will benefit.

the Family Affects your View of the World looks at the many characteristics
associated with the various positions in the family. Participants will gain a better understanding of the styles of their childrens behavior and how to avoid potential conflict between their own styles of behavior and those of their children. We will identify many of the characteristics associated with the oldest, only, next to the oldest, middle and youngest in the family and look at better ways to use the positive characteristics of each position.
