Checkpoint Experience

The rehabilitation center the author attended at age 20 changed their personality from being uncaring, reckless, abusive, selfish, and destructive to becoming a better person. The rehabilitation center used confrontation techniques like having patients yell at their own reflection in a mirror and sit in a chair in the middle of a circle while 80 people shouted insults. These techniques broke the author down mentally but then helped build them back up to become a more caring and reliable person. The author believes the rehabilitation center fully changed their personality for the better and the positive effects lasted into their 30s.

CheckPoint: My Experience

Think about an experience, positive or negative, that has affected the course of your life.
Post a 200- to 300-word response to the following: Do you think this event changed your
personality? If it has changed your personality, how has your personality been changed? If
the event has not changed your personality, why not? How much of your personality do you
think has been determined by environmental influence vs. genetic influence?

An experience that has affected my life and personality was being sent to rehabilitation when I was 20
years old. It has been many years since then and I am now in my 30s. The positive changes that I
experienced thru rehab have held up to this day...Before rehab I was an uncaring, reckless, abusive,
selfish, destructive and unreliable person. The rehab center that I was in broke me of all my negative
personality traits. They used tools such as the mirror indictment wherein a patient holds a mirror in
there hand and yells at them as an angry commentary on that persons behavior. Basically it is you
yelling at you. Another tool was the hot seat probe in this exercise eighty chairs are put in a large circle
and the person being probed is put in a single chair in the center. The eighty people in the circle begin to
shout at the person with insults and commentary on their behavior. This goes on until the person breaks
down and cant take it anymore. The center completely broke me down to nothing and then gave me a
solid foundation and built upon that foundation until I became the man I am today.
