Assignment 7: Date of Assignment: 21 January E-Course On IS:1893-2002 (Part I)

This document provides instructions for an assignment on analyzing seismic codes. It has three parts: 1) A reading assignment to review Section 7 of code IS:1893-2002, specifically subsections 7.9 to 7.12. 2) A true/false assignment with 6 statements to identify as true or false. 3) A question about estimating the natural period of a 3-story building both ignoring and including the stiffness contribution of brick masonry infill walls.

Assignment 7

Date of assignment: 21 January

E-Course on IS:1893-2002 (Part I)

1

Part I: Reading Assignment 6

Read carefully Section 7 of the Code.

Particularly, Sub-Sections 7.9 to 7.12.

Part II: True/ False

Identify the following statements as True or False

7.1) It is quite difficult to accurately assess the natural period of buildings. 7.2) Brick masonry infills do not contribute much lateral stiffness to the building. 7.3) Empirical expressions for natural period are based on data from real as-built buildings. 7.4) Choosing a lower value of damping will give a lower design force on the building. 7.5) As per 2002 edition of the code, it is sufficient to consider first three modes of vibration of the building. 7.6) SRSS is a good method for modal combination if the natural modes are well separated.

Part III: Questions

7.1) Consider a simple three-storey building shown. All beams are 250 X 500 and all
columns are 400 X 400. Storey height is 3.6m. Assume that all the outer beams carry 9 inch brick masonry infill walls. For simplification, assume that these infill walls have no openings, and interior beams have no infills. Let the seismic weight of each floor (and roof) be 14kN/sq.m (including weight of infills). Estimate fundamental natural period of the building in the X-direction using any suitable method of analysis. A) Ignore the stiffness contribution of infills. B) Include stiffness contribution of infills. 6m 6m
