Assignment 4: Date of Assignment: 17 January E-Course On IS:1893-2002 (Part I)

This document provides details for Assignment 4 of an e-course on earthquake-resistant design standard IS:1893-2002. It includes instructions to review Annexures D and E of the standard, identify true/false statements regarding seismic design provisions, and analyze a one-story building frame under different earthquake load cases to compare hogging moments in one of the beams. The assignment is dated 17 January and presented over 5 slides.

Assignment 4

Date of assignment: 17 January

E-Course on IS:1893-2002 (Part I)

1

Part I: Reading Assignment 4

Review Annexures D and E of IS:1893-2002

Assignment 4 / Slide 2

Part II: True/ False

Identify the following statements as True or False

4.1) Soft soils may locally amplify earthquake ground motion. 4.2) One should consider the possibility of strong earthquake shaking occurring simultaneously with strong wind. 4.3) Modulus of elasticity of concrete does not depend on the stress level in the member. 4.4) One should assume that design seismic loads in X- and Ydirections will occur simultaneously. 4.5) Load combination 0.9DL 1.5EL is to be used only when stability of the structure is an issue. 4.6) Bottom-face reinforcement in beams near joints is often governed by the load combination 0.9DL 1.5EL. 4.7) Design of a RC frame building, circular in plan, requires 100% + 30% rule for load combinations.

Part III: Questions

4.1) Consider a one-storey building wherein the frames are oriented at 45

degrees with the building plan. The design earthquake load is 50kN and it is same in the X- and the Y-directions.

a) b) c) d) the seismic hogging moments in beam AB for the following load cases: Earthquake load in X-direction only. Earthquake load in Y-direction only. Earthquake load acting parallel to beam AB. Earthquake load (full design load) acting in X- and Y-direction simultaneously. Earthquake loads applied by 100%+30% rule. Hogging moment in the beam obtained as per Cl. 6.3.4.2
