Reflective Analysis of Portfolio Artifact Rationale/Reflection NAEYC Standard:

STANDARD 1. PROMOTING CHILD DEVELOPMENT AND LEARNING Candidates prepared in early childhood degree programs are grounded in a child development knowledge base. They use their understanding of young childrens characteristics and needs, and of multiple interacting influences on childrens development and learning, to create environments that are healthy, respectful, supportive, and challenging for each child (National Association for the Education of Young Children, 2011).

Brief Description of Evidence:

During the spring 2013 semester as part of my ECED233 course, I compiled authentic examples of each stage of writing as well as describe childrens early writing development, the characteristics of the six stages, and what types of environment and experiences should be provided for children in order for them to acquire writing skills.

Analysis of What I Learned:

Through completion of this portfolio I was able to gain a better understanding of the stages of writing and the characteristics of each stage. I also gained an understanding environments and activities that will support and lead to each childs development of each stage and the eventual development of conventional and fluent writing and reading. I learned that a childs fine motor ability, special needs, and home environment influences a childs writing development. Throughout the 233 course I learned that positive and challenging environments play a significant role in a childs life.

How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the NAEYC Standard:

This project documents my knowledge of child development and childrens characteristics and needs in order to facilitate optimal development. It shows that I recognize the different stages of writing in which children progress leading to fluent writing and reading as well as the influence the environment and experiences have on their development. This project shows I know how to create supportive and challenging environments and experiences to influence their development of writing and reading.
