Highway Practical: University of Sulaimany Faculty of Engineering Building Construction Department

1. This document summarizes a student's report on a California Bearing Ratio (CBR) test conducted to determine the strength of a soil sample. 2. The test procedure involved compacting a wet soil sample in layers in a mold, then measuring penetration of a piston under increasing loads. 3. Penetrations were measured at 0.5, 1.5, 2, 3, 3.5, 4, 5, and 7.5mm and the CBR ratios were calculated for penetrations of 2.5mm and 5mm.

Test Name: California Bearing Ratio Test No. : 10

Student Name: Hawraz Muhammed Abdurrahman Group: B

Date of Experiment: Date of Submission:

Test Name: California bearing test (CBR) Introduction: This test is useful in determining the California bearing ratio (CBR) of soil and also used as an index of soil strength and bearing capacity.

Apparatus and materials: 1. Molds. 2. Spacer disk. 3. Indicator. 4. Surcharge weight. 5. Penetration piston. 6. Loading device. 7. Drying oven. 8. Compaction hammer.

Procedure: Weight a suitable amount of soil sample that pass through sieve No.19 Make the sample particles wet. Then the sample is put in the mold by 3 layers and each layer compacted 56 blows. Then the sample is weighed but with no cup. The mold is inverted and then its taken to the penetration equipment. As a result the penetrations obtained are as follows ((0.5 , 1.5, 2 , 3 , 3.5 , 4 , 5 , 7.5 ))

Calculation:

Result

Cbr ratio in (2.5mm)= Cbr ratio in (5mm)= As we can see the ratio in (5mm) is greater than (2.5) so the test must be repeated if same result obtained the value of (5mm) is taken as C.B.R value if not the value (2.5) From the graph appear that the curve passes through (0,0) so no need for correction. Cbr ratio in (2.5mm)= Cbr ratio in (5mm)=

Discussion: After doing our test for determining the California bearing ratio CBR which is used to determine the potential strength of soil against penetration. when we find the C.B.R for the penetration of the 2.5 mm( (3mm) with the correction) we find it also for the penetration of 5 mm (5.5mm)and it must be less than the C.B.R ratio of the 2.5 mm and it was O.K.

Errors might have occurred due to 1-Incorrect no. of blows. 2- not accuracy in reading data . 3- not enough cleaning the cup .
