Introduction: The ratio of the weight of any volume of a material to the weight of an equal volume of water both at a specified temperature is known as the Specific gravity.
Purpose of the test: This test method covers the determination of the specific gravity of bituminous material that could also be used for other properties of tarSpecific gravity of asphalt is essential in the determination of the effective asphalt content and percentage of voids in mix specimen.
Apparatus: A glass in which water and other materials is stored. Sensitive balance.
Procedure: 1- Firstly we measure the weight of the empty glass naming W1 2- Then we fill up the glass with water and then measure it again naming W2 3- Then the material contained in the glass is measured naming W3 4- Then the glass with the material is filled with water to half naming W4 5- Finally we can measure the specific gravity using the formula below S.G = (W3-W1)/{(W2-W1)-(W4-W3)}
Calculation:
Data obtained W1=34.47 gm. W2=80.3 gm. W3=67.03 gm. W4=85.08 gm.
Discussion: In this test we carried out a certain method for obtaining the specific gravity of a bitumen material using glass, water and the material. After carrying out the test and obtaining the results we found that the Specific gravity of the material was 1.16 gm/cm when comparing this data to the Standard Engineering Specification which is limit is (0.97 1.02) gm/cm we find that our test was failed this might be relating to the accuracy while carrying out the test such as measuring the weights of the materials such as water and glass.
