Homework 1

The document contains instructions for 5 assignment questions on open channel flow geometry and hydraulics: 1. Calculate geometric properties of semi-circular and trapezoidal channel sections. 2. Evaluate geometric properties and flow condition of a triangular channel. Also analyze a parabolic channel. 3. Estimate discharge and calculate Manning's n for a composite earth canal section. 4. Determine equivalent bed slopes between river sections using two methods and calculate the percentage difference. 5. Collect bed level data along a 2km river reach and perform calculations from questions 1-4.

ASSIGNMENT1 : TOPIC 2 1. Calculate the geometric elements of a semi-circular section with a cross-sectional area of 10.0 m2.

If a trapezoidal section with a 3.0 m bed width and 1:2 side slopes replaces the section, calculate the depth of flow(y), top width(B), hydraulic radius(R), hydraulic depth (D) and section factor (Z).
2.

A triangular channel with slide slopes of 1:1.5 carries a discharge of 5 m3/s with a velocity of 0.98 m/s. Evaluate the geometric elements of the channel. Determine flow condition of this channel. A parabolic channel has 4 m top width and 2.5 m channel depth. The water in the channel is 1.75 m deep and is flowing at a rate of 21 m3 /s. Determine the area of flow, wetted perimeter, hydraulic radius, hydraulic depth and section factor. Is the flow laminar or turbulent if the water temperature is 20 C?

3.

4. An earth canal section (shown in Figure Q4) is 2.1m wide at the bottom. The section was extended with triangle section with side slope of 3(Horizontal):1(Vertical). The bed slope of the canal is 0.7/1610 m/m. Assuming n for rectangular channel =0.014 and n for triangle section 0.02, i. Estimate the discharge when the depth of flow is 1.8m. ii. Determine ne.
