Name: Quiz #2: Show ALL Work and Provide Answers With Appropriate Units!

The document is a quiz question asking the student to analyze the forces acting on a car and driver traveling at constant speed over a circular hill and into a circular valley of the same radius. The student is asked to draw free body diagrams of the car at the top of the hill and bottom of the valley, and calculate the car's speed at the top of the hill and the normal force on the driver at the bottom of the valley in terms of given variables.

Quiz #2

Modified Problem 6-49. In the figure, a car is driven at constant speed over a circular hill and then

into a circular valley with the same radius R [m]. At the top of the hill, the normal force on the driver from the car seat is 0. The driver's mass is m [kg] and gravity acceleration is g [m/s2].

1) Draw the free-body and inertial diagrams of the car when it is at the top of the hill. (1 pt)

2) What is the speed of the car at this point in terms of m, g, and R? ( 1 pt)

3) Draw the free-body and inertial diagrams of the car when it is in the valley. (1 pt)

4) What is the normal force on the driver from the seat when the car passes through the bottom of the valley in terms of m, g, and R? Assume the car maintains the same speed as in part 2 above. 2 pt
