Linearity in Nature: Engineering Through Linear Algebra: Test 2 Maximum Marks:25

1. This document contains a practice exam for a linear algebra test with 3 questions. 2. The first question defines a vector space and asks to show that R3 is a vector space, defines a subspace, and checks if two sets are subspaces of R3. 3. The second question checks if several sets of vectors are linearly independent in various vector spaces. 4. The third question defines basis and dimension of a vector space, gives the standard basis and dimension of R3, and asks to extend sets to form bases in R3 and R4.

1. Attempt any two parts
(a) Define a vector space V (F ). Show that R3 (R) is a vector space.
(b) Let S V , when is S said to be a subspace of V , over the field
F . Check if
(a.) W1 = {(a1 , a2 , a3 ) : a1 + a2 + a3 = 0 is a subspace of R3 (R).
(b.) W2 = {(a1 , a2 , a3 ) : a1 + a2 0 is a subspace of R3 (R).
(c) Check if L(S) = L(T ) when
S = {(1, 2, 1), (3, 1, 5)} and T = {(1, 2, 1), (3, 1, 5), (3, 4, 7)}.
Justify.

2. Check if the following sets are linearly independent.
(a.) {(1, 0, 1, 0), (2, 1, 3, 0), (1, 0, 0, 0), (1, 0, 1, 0)} in R4 (R).
(b.) {(1, 2, 0), (0, 3, 1), (1, 0, 1)} in R3 (R).
(c.) {v}, v 6= 0 in V (F ).
