By Imperato Massimo

What does it mean?

Ground tackle consists of all the equipment used in anchoring. This includes the anchors, anchor cables or chain, connecting devices, and the anchor windlass.

Anchor
An anchor is a device, normally made of metal, that is used to connect a vessel to the bed of a body of water to prevent the vessel from drifting due to wind or current.

Anchor chain
The chain that attaches an anchor to a vessel. And its made of metal and is composed by dielocks.

Anchor windlass
An anchor windlass is a machine that restrains and manipulates the anchor chain and/or rope on a boat, allowing the anchor to be raised and lowered. A notched wheel engages the links of the chain or the rope.

Capstan
A capstan is a vertical-axled rotating machine developed for use on sailing ships to apply force to ropes, cables, and hawsers. The principle is similar to that of the windlass, which has a horizontal axle.
