OP-AMP Open Loop Configuration

An op-amp comparator compares input voltages and outputs a voltage depending on which input is larger. It is used in sensors and LED systems to detect voltage levels. In a single supply configuration, the output will be at the positive supply voltage if the non-inverting input is greater and at 0V if the inverting input is greater. In a dual supply configuration, the output will be at the positive or negative supply voltage depending on which input is greater. Comparators are useful for applying or changing a DC voltage depending on voltage conditions.

COMPARATORS
- A configuration for op-amps that aims to compare voltages and give an output depending on which is the larger voltage between two or more sources. - Also called as level detector - Used in sensors, LED systems, etc.

Typical op-amp comparator

THEORY
Vout = A(V2-V1) SINGLE SUPPLY: - V2 >> V1 (Vout = Vcc) - V1 >> V2 (Vout = 0)

Ideal case: Vout = 1/2Vcc If V2 = V1

DUAL SUPPLY: - Sine to square wave generator - V2 >> V1 (Vout = Vcc) - V1 >> V2 (Vout = -Vee)
Ideal case: Vout = 0 If V1 = V2

6V

3V

6V > Vin > 3V then

Vout in OA1 and OA2 = 0

Vin >> 6V then

Vout in OA1 = infinity or 9V, Vout in OA2 = 0

3V >> Vin then

Vout in OA2 = infinity or 9V, Vout in OA1 = 0

CONCLUSION
1) Comparators are useful especially for applying a stable DC voltage. 2) It can also change a DC voltage depending on the condition specified.
