European railway standards EN 50126, EN 50128 and EN 50129 have been developed by CENELEC the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardisation. These standards do not apply to heavy rail systems alone as their heading 'Railway Applications' may imply, but also to light rail and urban mass transportation systems, including people mover systems. The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), in close cooperation with CENELEC, has begun to adopt these standards, thus making them the first international standards in this application fields.

Railway-applicable CENELEC standards include: EN 50126 (international equivalent: IEC 62278), 'Railway Applications The Specification and Demonstration of Reliability, Availability, Maintainability and Safety' (RAMS); EN 50128 (international equivalent: IEC 62279), Railway Applications Communications, Signalling and Processing Systems Software for Railway Control And Protection Systems; EN 50129, Railway Applications Communication, Signalling and Processing Systems Safety Related Electronic Systems for Signalling; EN 50159, Railway Applications Communication, Signalling and Processing Systems Safety Related Communication in Open and Closed Transmission Systems' (two parts); EN 50125, Railway Applications Environmental Conditions for Equipment on Board Rolling Stock, in Fixed Installations and for Signalling and Communications' (three parts); EN 50155, Railway Applications Electronic Equipment Used on Rolling Stock; EN 50121, Railway Applications Electromagnetic Compatibility' (EMC) (six parts); EN 50238, Railway Applications Communication, Signalling and Processing Systems Compatibility between Rolling Stock and Train Detection Systems.
